Faraday's Cage

The demonstration is a standard in any large lecture hall in physics: Put a person into an all-metallic cage and hit the cage with lightning! (The high voltage, about 30000 V, to do this is provided by a Van de Graaff generator, on the right side of the video clip). What happens?

Contrary to our naive expectations, the person inside the cage is not hurt by this procedure, even if he touches the metal right at the point where the sparks hit:
